Don’t you just hate when you play a track and it’s written “Unknown Artist – Track 1” and you have to do a Baba Jukwa-like investigation to find out who the artist is? Shazam doesn’t help either smh. It’s tracks like these that are constantly a victim of my “storage cleaning”. So what? Some may say, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to enlighten you on the use of ID3 tags.
I’ve covered some of this in a previous article. A track without ID3 tags is like a letter in the mailbox with no address. ID3 tags, in plain English is the extra data stored on audio files, stating the Artist, Song Title, Track Number, Comment, Lyrics etc. Let me break down the importance of each
One of the two key tags of them, please spare the listener the Indiana Jones drama by stating your Name, whether Group Name or individual artist name. We really would like to know who it is we are listening to, for future reference whether good or bad. This helps especially if you’re sending tracks on Whatsapp (I get tons of these per day) and truthfully if your track has no tags it’s ‘lost’ in my phone. How am I supposed to review a track by an unknown artist? That’s too much work on my part.
The second of the key tags; Don’t let the listener come up with their own title for YOUR song. It saves us time and effort as we search through our libraries for your track.
Feel free to add your information here (i.e. A link for where to find more of your music, Facebook page link, Twitter handle, Phone number; if you’re feeling generous). This is vital for new fans so that they know where to get in touch with you.
Did I mention that for those with iTunes installed it is set by default to organize the music library using ID3 tags? So the probable reason why someone didn’t hear your track is because it got rightfully moved to the ‘dodgy’ Unknown folder. So do yourself and everyone else else a favour by labeling your music. There’s a lot of software that does this, my favourite is MP3Tag. Oh, and you can also add your cover art.
You can thank me later.
