This Whatsapp chat happened on the 21st of January, 2015 between Mcpotar and Anonzi Xndr. Xndr is a Zimbabwe based Zimbabwean Hip-hop producer, responsible for bringing up various artistes we have talked about this blog including Boneman, MMT, Mc Cut and Schingy. He has also produced internationally recognized Crimson Blu and happens to rap himself.
So Xndr you have been producing for a while but which year was your come up?
Though I opened my studio in 2010 my come up year was 2011 when I produced Tatea Da MC H-Town featuring Crimson Blu and Shastro’s It’s You ft Cindy. (Both have high un-bought views on Youtube)
Yeah let’s talk about H-town. I heard you on the remix. Do people accept you as a Producer and a rapper or they see a producer who sometimes raps?
Tatea’s version is the remix, initially that was my song which I felt would have a stronger reach if Tatea’s version came out. People accept me as neither rapper nor singer, but mostly as a producer who entertains since I’m hands on.
So H-town came out. Dope video, did spins on Channel O, Zim Hip-hop Awards and all of a sudden guns out. The streets were saying Tatea can’t possibly crown himself and so much hate in the air. What did all that drama mean to you?
It didn’t mean anything because none had the work to back up why they were disagreeing… with his calm.
Then in early 2013 you began the year with Wake Up. I know you get asked this a lot but was Wake Up a diss record? If not what type of record do you liken it to?
It was a record that had a lot of hip-hop humour which was translated in various ways to suit certain people’s definitions and goals that were negative in nature… to create friction between certain people…
Is there hope of Team Rehab working with what you (Xndr) usually like to term “North Samora”. Also what are your chances of ever working with Noble Stylz?
Team Rehab has worked with North Samora at the height of North/South rivalry… Simbab Tagz, 0-25, Kapital K amongst others were on the MMT album in which I was the executive producer.
I even had a collaborative production with B.Sun (Begotten Sun) on Shingi Mau Mau’s Ndamutswa…
How does Rehab end up taking up 1 Gig of my hard drive in 2years? How many signees do you have and how many hours do you work? I do know you are actually in the booth as we proceed with the interview.
Hahaha the 1 Gig you have accessed is 30% of total output, the rest is unreleased due to the performance of the 1 Gig. When music performs well there’s no rush to release more. I work 7am to 7pm mostly from Tuesday to Saturday, my off day is Monday but at times I can resist coming to the studio.
Team Rehab has over 30 artistes at any given time. Some are main-stream and some will be going through grooming waiting their turn.
[New artistes to look out for: Stayz (Masvingo), Terry (Harare), PMan (Norton), TTK (Mutare)]
Are you releasing a new compilation this year and how successful was the previous one?
Yes definitely wanted to offer 2 a year… last year things got hectic and had to re-strategize. Last one was Team Rehab Vol.1. The album received good rotation on radio after its release in April, sold over 1000 hard copies to date. Team Rehab vol.2 will be out in the first quarter of the year.
What were your thoughts about last year’s Christian Awards. Tell us which award you won for.
They were amazing, after encouraging Nowizz to do them, because I met him at a certain period where he was saying he was giving up due to pressure from financial challenges.
He handled them well. I literally produced over 60% of the Christian Hip-hop the past two years… I won best producer, then my work for the following led to their winning:
Bry360 (MVP Award), Creezy, GJoza, Tnash Wutete, Shingirai Mau Mau (best collabo)… the other titles I’d have to verify. So 6 awards in total including producer of the year.
Wow, that’s amazing king. It’s been great having you for the interview; before you go I need a list of 7 rappers from anywhere that you respect.
Mc Cut, Jay-Z, Tehn Diamond, Drake, L-Tido, Crooger, Kapital K
