This went online last Sunday (6 September 2015) and it looks like it is going to be the first of many. Centauri, Tru North, Pharoah, Sharky and Nifty. Shoutout to Nifty for the concept. I co-sign this and hope there will be a lot more of these in the future.
The following is an excerpt from The Lens Blur blog explaining the concept.
My country, Zimbabwe, has a rap scene. It’s been around for ages and it’s never really gone anywhere big. but I’ve noticed that there’s more than a few good rappers. More than a few people who are great at making simple words sound cool. But I’ve never seen or heard of a cypher. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places (this wouldn’t surprise me, since most Zimbabwean rappers would prefer you applied your tongue to their nether regions before they gave you a nursery rhyme). That notwithstanding, I’ve set about trying to gather bars for a cypher. A Zimbabwean Hip Hop cypher. Nothing serious, just bars. Here are the “rules of engagement”:
- Each rapper has up to 52 bars with which to express themselves, however they want.
- Rappers will record their vocals over a selected beat and send their acapella (sp) vocals on a MP3-encoded file to thelensblur@.
- I will then place these acapella (sp) files on the selected beat, looped out to allow all the bars to fit.
- Each rapper who sends in their vocals for this cypher will have their image placed below with a link to their music, if there is one available.
