Dimitri & The Scarecrow were nominated in the 2015 Zim Hip-Hop Awards. In case you were wondering who they are I hope this article will enlighten you. Dimitri & The Scarecrow is an alternative hip-hop band which fuses classic Hip-Hop-oriented rhythms with sound emanating from the jazz, alternative and rock genres. Essentially the band consists of five members with the occasional pianist for particular songs.
The Book Cafe Open Mic Night is where the band was formed after Dimitri (Main Vocalist) approached Francis “Sweet” Jiri (Bassist, Frank) with a request that he play a riff for his performance. The need for live instrumentation arose after Dimitri had performed twice with a back track and realised that there was a need for some form of dynamic captivation for the audience. After a few successful nights at the open mic, Frank introduced his now former neighbourhood friends George Ota (Lead Guitarist), Vengai Ota (Rhythm Guitarist & Vocalist) and Billy Ngwira (Drummer). This marked the formation of Dimitri & The Scarecrow (October, 2012).
The Scarecrow etymology:
This stems from a track from the band’s debut release “Scarecrow the EP” and was penned by Dimitri during the height of sanctions in the wake of the land reform in Zimbabwe. The symbolism of the scarecrow that guards “The Man’s” fields with aspirations to fulfil his role as the inanimate protector of the exposed “bread” for The Man’s survival is a sharp criticism of the political situation in Zimbabwe. When scarecrows walk and talk, neglecting their “roots” for the feeling of injustice perpetrated by the “Lords of the Land,” there is a gross imbalance which requires that someone stands for, yet no one expresses this sentiment for fear of “The Man!” Zimbabweans are in the opinion of many, a passive resistant people who try to keep their heads down for simple survival because any rioting or demonstration is met with cruel force by people in power. Hopefully when “The Scarecrow” has spoken and moved from its rooted position, perhaps people will awake to the imbalance of things in their communities!
