So you've got a studio to record at, beats on hand and someone to record you, you're sorted right? Not exactly.
So you've got a studio to record at, beats on hand and someone to record you, you're sorted right? Not exactly. This all makes sense if you want to create a singles collection but an album is a whole-different ball game. There a crucial missing link that you need, a creative director. Who is this guy? What does he/she do? Are they really necessary? Let me break it down for you below
Creative directors plan promotion, oversee the creative process and give guidance to the artists they work with. Still don't get it? Okay, let me break it down for you. A creative director is the guy that transforms your songs into a cohesive album that tells an overall story while sticking to a certain theme.
*An example of accreditation of a creative director on line 4 for Jim Jones' Hustler's P.O.M.E album
Unfortunately, especially in Zim Hip-Hop, the creative director's value is downplayed and some producers try to play the creative director role, with varying degrees of success. To make it clear a producer and a creative director are ideally two different people. Producers tend to want to make sure every recording is part of an album, while may sound like a logically-sound idea but may have dire creative consequences.
Picture the following two scenarios. A project with 16 tracks where only half of it is good/decent and the rest are just filler tracks. Now picture another project with the same tracks but with 8 of the good ones and 2 filler tracks. Which one would you rather have? Scenario A has 50% good tracks and Scenario B has 80% good tracks. It's a no-brainer which one will have a better commercial success rate. No points for guessing who makes this happen, yes, it's the CREATIVE DIRECTOR.
It's not just about how many tracks make the cut but about how they relate to each other. I'm talking about the theme transitions in the tracks, how the beats flow into each other... you get the drift right?
I could go all day but I'd have to charge extra for that...
I, being a creative director myself have worked on Kidd Aktive's Trapped album, Savage's Jungle Fever album, T1 WeMa1's Inzwa album and more recently Marcques & Mile's LIT album. For my services you can contact me on +263774683998.
If you know any other creative director you're free to contact them and work out an action plan for your next project.
