Bulawayo rapper, Indigo Saint, has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Zim Hip-Hop after being named one of the best MC's in Zimbabwe by MTV. The Blunts EPs showcased his ability and had a strong message from beginning to end. I recently caught up with the Saint to discuss a range of topics which speak to his place in the industry and the pressures that come with it
What made you want to get into the business? Lol I'm guessing you mean hip hop? I don't know man, it's always been something I loved. I used to write raps in high school and remix popular songs at the time. Lol, but I always thought it would be cool to rap and i was right. It's the coolest thing on the planet 😂 How did it feel like being recognized as one of the hottest acts in Zimbabwe by MTV? Lol, it was nice. I've always just wanted to be heard and recognised for what I'm doing. So that gave me mad confidence to see the year through.
What are the challenges you have faced so far in your career? Being heard fam. For one, I know this wouldn't be happening if that MTV list hadn't happened. It kinda sucks that, that's what had to happen before I could be heard in my own city. But issok. We're here now. Uhm, what else? Yeah, I think the hardest thing has been trying to get heard. And then there were the gate keepers at radio, and the emails that were sent to radio but were never replied to (even with a acknowledgement of receipt type email). There's a span i can go on about bruh, but I'd rather not.
Do you have any advice for the upcoming hip hop artists? Lol, upcoming like myself? Lol, sure. Respect no one bruh. We all spit bars. We all write rhymes. No one is bigger than you. There's just people who started before you did. Keep at it. No one owes you a thing. No one has to listen to your song or download it or like it. Uh what else, stay humble. You're not rapping to impress other rappers you're doing it to lure fans. And make mistakes. Make a fuck load of those. And learn as much as you can. Especially what you think you won't need. You'll be surprised.
Where do you see for self in the next 5 years? Fuck, I'll be 30 😐 lol, everything I want when I'm thirty I want to get now. Shows, concerts, tours, live bands. But I want to give back bruh. Lol, ask me again at the end of this year, I'll have a proper answer for you.
Who are the artists in Zimbabwe you would like to work with? I think it would be really dope to work with AWA and Ammara Brown. The energies could be really nanas! But yeah I'm keen to work with whoever granted we're making something new or next level. Lol. Don't give a fuck about names really.
